About Maine Coons

Origin

Maine Coon is a large domestic cat breed. Large and social, hence the name "gentle giant". The breed was popular in cat shows in the late 19th century. But literature dates back to as far as 1861.

 Appearance

Maine coons have a dense coat of fur and long tufts of fur growing between their toes help keep the toes warm. Heavily furred ears with extra long tufts of fur growing from inside can keep warm more easily. Maine Coons need to be groomed about 2-3 times per week. On average, males weigh from 13 to 18 lb (5.9 to 8.2 kg), with females weighing from 8 to 12 lb (3.6 to 5.4 kg). Prominent ruff along its chest,  robust bone structure, strong jawline, rectangular body shape,  and a long bushy tail. Maine Coon cats are noted to show an increased incidence of "polydactylism"(Cats that have extra toes on either their front and/or hind feet.) compared to other breeds. There's nothing medically wrong with a cat having extra toes, nor does it hurt.

Personality

 The Maine Coon is often cited as having "dog like" characteristics by being friendly, affectionate, playful, intelligent, loyal and highly trainable. They love attention and have great Social bonds with there owners so they will follow and are likely to sleep close to the owner or cuddle. Maine coons have a well mannered temperament and are good with children which makes for an ideal family pet.

Kittens

Maine Coons do about 90% of their growth before the age of 9-12 months old they do not stop growing completely until they are between 3-5 years old. You will start to see their iconic tufted chests, manes, and tufted paws start to develop by around 9 months old. Chest tufts might not stop growing until they have matured slightly more, at roughly 2 years of age. The price of a kitten can vary due to the gender and color. The approximate price is around $2,500 - $3,500.
